Here's one last silly thing to clear the palate.

This takes place in the present day of the setting and, well, you'll see.

Jenny Everywhere is enjoying
Boyz R

“Jenny Everywhere, who is this?!” Kim’s shout carried through the apartment.

“Ack!”, Jenny yelped less than eloquently at her roommate’s bellow.

She flailed a moment, found the stereo’s controls and muted the music – Arrowsmith’s “Sweet Taste of Pakistan” – and got to her feet. Clearly there was a social situation in progress.

Sure enough, Kim walked into the living room and asked, “Is that a new friend in the bathroom?”

“Yeah, sort of, and also no not exactly, more like homework. That’s Roy Zee, from Boyz R.”

“I found your homework getting out of the shower.”

“Your babe friend walked in on me, yo!”, said the homework, following her out into the living room, still wet and dripping. He was a very handsome young man, slim and graceful, and well formed in both face and body. The ladies were left in no doubt about this as he was also completely naked.

“Ah! Yeah, yeah, I see she did,” Jenny agreed happily, looking him over more than was strictly necessary. She smiled in appreciation, visibly blushing. “Roy Zee, this is my roommate Kim. You should be nice to her.”

“What up, girl?”, he said pleasantly, smiling and showing perfect white teeth.

“To what do we owe the pleasure, Jenny?”, Kim asked, not visibly impressed.

“Boyz R is in town and I’m doing an interview. Boy bands aren’t my usual beat, but they were here and so was I, so I went over to the hotel and borrowed some of the talent.”

“That’s me, yo,” said their wet guest.

“And you brought him home?”

“I wanted somewhere quiet and you have to get them alone… How much do you know about the boy band industry?”

“Very little, why? Does it matter?”, Kim asked.

“Maybe not. But I meant it when I said he’s part of the band; they share a group mind. That’s how they sing and dance in perfect unison, all the time.” Jenny shrugged. “But you have to get them apart to do interviews, otherwise it shows that there’s only the one guy there and he’s not too bright.”

“It’s different from how you’re multiple people at once, then?”

“Oh yeah, completely. Every one of me is me, but she’s also her,” Jenny explained unhelpfully. “Roy Zee is part of his band. Boyz R is Roy Z, Rob C, Randy M, Rick P, and Slick Rory, on Monday Green Records.”

“Hey, babe,” Roy said cheerfully, hearing his name.

“For new bands they’re all brought out of their pods at once, so they bond together. It’s no big deal to crack open a pod in case a band needs to replace one of the boys, though. That’s one of the challenges of touring with boy bands, hauling a few spare pods around.”

“Pods?”, Kim asked.

“You know the stories about babies found in cabbage patches? Or Momotoro, the boy who came out of a peach? Same thing, sort of.”

“It all sounds very strange,” Kim said, glancing over at their guest. Without anyone paying attention to him, he had come to rest in a quietly photogenic pose.

“Oh, hey, check this out.” Jenny reached over to a pile of promotional material and produced a garishly colorful magazine featuring a group of well presented boys on the cover. She handed it to Kim.

“So this is his group?”, Kim asked. She considered the adolescent singers, all of whom looked like rather similar teenage boys to her, although undeniably physically attractive and very well photographed. She glanced over at the damp and handsome young man, then back at the cover photo.

“You’d think so, right? You can’t even tell which one he’s supposed to be!” Jenny shrugged. “Actually, it’s a trick question; he’s not any of them. That’s Adolescent Utopia from two years ago, and they used the same clone group as Boyz R. And BBFF, Best Boys Friends Forever. So does X-Pose in the K-Pop scene.”

“All of them are the same boys?”

“Basically. You’d think somebody would notice that none of the boys in X-Pose are Korean, but nobody ever mentions it. Lots of wondering how gay the boys in BBFF are, but I can understand that. I mean, look at him and imagine five of him sharing hotel rooms.”

Having reminded herself of the idea, Jenny took the opportunity to look at Roy Zee again. In return he gave her an inviting and sexually nonthreatening grin. Jenny absent-mindedly loosened her scarf, imagining.

“How many actual singers are there?”, Kim asked.

“You mean clone lines? About six major ones. So… six.” Jenny shrugged.

“Six boys for the whole music industry?”

“No, just for the boy band market. It’s not really music, more like marketing and audio wallpaper...”

“Clone life, yo?”, Roy asked, sounding uncertain.

“I see. Speaking of seeing…” Kim left the idea out there and Jenny did not pick it up. She raised an eyebrow. Then she gave up and asked bluntly, “Jenny, does he have pants?”

“Yeah, somewhere. He was wearing clothes when we got here.” Jenny did not seem very worried about where those clothes had gotten to, nor her decorative guest’s lack of them.

“Please find them,” Kim said.

Jenny sighed, then giggled. “Spoilsport.”
